By now, most people in the UK will have heard of the potential black outs we face over the next couple of years due to the lack of energy supply. But is there anything we can do to help? Although we can’t miraculously turn the situation around, businesses can certainly do their bit to reduce energy consumption in the UK.

For those who are unaware of the position, traditional energy sources are diminishing at an alarming rate and demand for energy is continuing to rise. Buying from abroad is increasingly difficult and expensive as there is a shrinking worldwide supply and our ability to produce enough energy is in doubt due to a lack of power plants in the UK that comply with European environmental targets. For instance five of our 14 coal-fired stations must close in 2015, with the remaining possibly facing closure by 2020.

It can take three to five years to build a power station so Ofgem fears that we may run out of power in the meantime as we can’t build the plants at the rate we need to. 

Parliament is currently addressing our power generation issues through the electricity market reform (EMR) process, which encourages low carbon and renewable energy development with the aim of decarbonising the UK’s energy supply by 2050. With our need to reduce the UK's dependence on carbon fuels, the government hopes at least eight nuclear plants will be under construction by 2015, starting with the recently agreed EDF contract to build the Hinkley Point C plant in Somerset.

So what does the energy supply crisis mean for businesses? It’s fair to say there would be grave consequences if the UK does suffer power cuts. Without energy, businesses would face days of downtime as heavily relied upon telecommunication networks, commercial refrigeration and banking functions etc fail, running water stops and heating becomes impossible. According to estimates, just one hour of interruption would cost businesses between £800 - £8,500.

We believe businesses can definitely do their bit to reduce their energy consumption while the new power plants are being built. A collaboration of 26 partners from five European countries are to conduct research to develop low energy, environmental sensors and sensor networks for use with energy management systems in buildings or aircraft passenger cabins.

Innovative and connected sensor systems are an essential component for the detection of air quality in modern building management systems. The project focuses on developing new low-power connected sensor systems, based on semiconductors and heterogeneous 3D integration for the detection of environmental parameters such as CO2, CO or humidity. The project will target applications that require highly reliable information about environmental conditions in order to deduct measures that help to reduce the use of energy.

In combination with solutions for air quality management, the potential to save energy inside buildings is more than 30%, for airplanes the potential is around 5% of the whole energy balance.

Scheduled to be conducted over the next three years, the research project, called Environmental Sensors for Energy Efficiency (ESEE), has the support of the European Union through its ENIAC joint undertaking as well as by national and regional funding of the participating nations.
